How to Paint Kitchen Chairs

Painting kitchen chairs or other furniture by hand can be time consuming. Save energy and money by using a paint sprayer.

DIFFICULTY: Easy

Overview

If you’ve ever painted chairs, especially chairs with spindles, by hand you know that it is very time consuming. A few years back we gave our kitchen a makeover. To keep the budget in check, I decided to paint my kitchen table and chairs rather than buy new. It was a sturdy set, just outdated.

1

Chipped chairs

I didn’t have a paint sprayer at that time, so I painted the chairs by hand. First primer, then the paint. It took days!

Fast forward to today. They had begun to chip in a few places so I wanted to give them a fresh coat of paint to polish them up. This time I was ready with my Wagner FLEXiO 5000 paint sprayer.

Set up workspace

I set up shop in my backyard for this project.

Spray bottom of chairs

I wanted to keep them basically the same blue gray color as I originally chose. I turned the chairs upside and began spraying the bottom portion first. When I did that, I could see how many spots I had missed with the brush the first time around.

Spray top of chairs

Next, I turned them right side up and finished spraying the rest. What took me days to do last time took me all of about 10 minutes this time around using my sprayer. Honestly, I don’t know why I didn’t get one sooner!

Clean sprayer and let chairs dry

While the chairs were drying, I ran water through my sprayer to clean it out. I usually do that two times to be sure it’s clean.

I left the chairs out to dry for the rest of the day, bringing them inside right before dark. You can see how the pretty blue/gray paint adds a nice pop of color to my otherwise neutral kitchen.

The right tool for the job!

While I was working on this project, I kept thinking back to how long it took me the first time around. It’s amazing how much time can be saved when you have the right tool for the job!
