Preparation
Staining doors can be a bit tricky. The following tips will make the job easier.
Step 1 - Remove Door and Hardware
Remove the door from the hinge. Carefully place the door in your workshop or up against a wall so it can’t tip over and get damaged. Remove all the doorknobs and hardware. Organize all the hardware in a bag or box that is clearly marked so it won’t get lost or misplaced.
Step 2 - Repairing Damage
Sand down any rough areas. Patch up any dents or deep scratches with wood putty. Let those dry and then sand them smooth. Wipe down the doors to remove any remaining dust.
Painting
Once the door is removed and repaired, if necessary, the time has come to stain it.
Step 1 - Staining preparations
Select a high quality stain and work in well-ventilated area. Use a mask, gloves and safety glasses.
Step 2 - Cleaning the door
After you have thoroughly prepared and cleaned the surface, allow it to dry for 24-48 hours prior to painting or staining it. This will ensure the surface is ready and allow for the best possible material adherence and coverage.
Step 3 - Staining the door
As the door dries from cleaning, work to stain the doorjamb. Mask off the walls, floor and surrounding areas. Spray on the stain. Apply the stain evenly and always go with the grain of the wood. Have a cloth ready to smooth out any heavy areas or possible drips. Complete all the doorjambs and then stain the doors. Let it all dry and then apply a second coat of stain.
