Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Sprayer My cedar fence project has taken more time to complete than I expected but the Wagner Control Pro 170 Cart Paint Sprayer was patient and ready when it was finally time to apply the stain. I’ve used Wagner hand held paint and stain sprayers before but this was my first time using something so sophisticated. I watched the videos on the Wagner website and read the directions twice. Assembly was simple and involved attaching yellow compartment doors to the top, attaching the hose to the pump, attaching the spray gun/nozzle to the hose, inserting the key into the nozzle, and extending the handle. It only took a few minutes. The startup procedure seemed involved in the directions but it certainly was not: Connect the electric cord, stick the siphon and return into the material, prime the pump, load the gun, make sure the green key is pointed the right direction, spray the fence. The first thing you notice is the amount of material this thing delivers. The Wagner videos show painters making quick progress with their painting and once you power The Wagner Pro 170 up you understand. I was a bit slow with the motions at first but quickly got into the proper rhythm. The fifty foot hose is easy to manage. For my fence staining project, I put the siphon right into the 1 gallon can of oil based stain. I did make quick work of that gallon of stain but I made quick progress with the fence as well. I was surprised at just how little stain was left in the gallon container when I was finished, just a few ounces. For cleanup I ran mineral spirits through the siphon and return and through the hose and gun/nozzle. It does take a bit of spirit to clean this thing but that should be expected with a fifty foot hose. Now that I’ve used this thing, I’m hooked. The cedar fence was the perfect training project. Here is what is coming next. I’m doing the garage doors. They’re a particle material, installed and coated with a pigmented material in the mid 80’s. I’d say it’s time. I’m going to remove and replace the trim strip that has those vinyl seals, mask the aluminum and the concrete floor and then attack. Then I plan on coating my greenhouse with that white stain compound. I’ve used one of those woven tarps in the past but the animals turned it into a home during the off season. That was enough for me. With this Wanger Pro 170, an annual coating of the greenhouse should be no challenge. Then I’m doing the interior of the house. Our monotone paint scheme of antique white, light almond if you prefer, lends itself to this type of painting strategy. Thanks people at Wagner for such a great sprayer that really lives up to your reputation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Control Pro 170 Cart I admit, I am not a painter but, I did find this sprayer easy to use. I normally use brushes and rollers and have used compressed air paint spray guns which always seemed to be a pain because of the adjustments and getting the correct paint viscosity. Setting up the sprayer was simple and I first tried it out with water; everything worked great. I then tested the sprayer using paint to spray cardboard and scrap OCB. I used about a third gallon of 3-year-old paint that I thinned with a little water. Once the sprayer was primed, I started spraying and after a little practice I had the hang of it. The sprayer again worked well. The overspray was minor and the paint went on easily and smoothly. In a few weeks I will be painting the interior of a house a friend is currently building and am expecting a good result. Being a cart model, I will be using a five-gallon pail for the paint and with the fifty-foot hose, we shouldn’t need to move the sprayer much while moving through the house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sprayer with a few exceptions This is a great sprayers. I used some older stain and I think it stopped up the spray nossle a couple times. Overall pleased with the sprayer, It did a great job on my 400+ feet of fence and being able to just put a 5 gallon bucket under it and roll made it super convenient. clean up was a little tedious but it should be better the next time i use the sprayer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is the tool to have Honestly, I've lost count of how many times I've said "I LOVE THIS" and "THIS is what we should have bought first". I'm blasting through trim and doors. The power level isn't even on maximum and it is having zero issues keeping up, as fast as I can put the paint down. In fact, I'm not even going as fast as I should. There are some spots that are running because I'm still trying to break the slow habit I learned off the FLEXiO 590. It is literally taking under 15 seconds to paint the face of a door, with latex. The cart is terrific no more lugging around buckets of paint The overspray is absolutely no where near what I had feared. I'm using a .015 tip which is the minimum for the latex I'm using. If you have a lot of rooms to paint, then YOU NEED THIS. Don't waste your time on the handheld models! Between drying for the doors and rooms I just wipe the tip off and so far, I've had no gunking issues. It is nice to take a break without having to strip down and clean the entire unit. In my case, I'm painting our 4,060 sq ft interior, and then will be doing an entire fence with stain. I started first with our tiki bar and deck This going to go so fast now with the proper tool. If you was a professional product, use a tool the professionals would use. I'm loving this thing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great outfit I used my 170 pro with cart to spray my pull behind trailer. It was very easy to set up and you simply placed the paint container under the siphon tube. The motor only runs when pulling the airgun trigger and it is not very loud. The entire outfit is great quality and the interchangeable tips allows great flexibility on the type of material used. Believe it or not, it is so much fun to use and the spray pattern stays even and uniform. It cuts the time to do a job to a fraction of what it would normally take. I think the feature that really stands out is that you can use the hook on the frame to secure your paint container which makes it possible to simply move the whole unit and material to follow the job. As with all paint units of this type, clean up takes a little time, but even if it is not bad I definitely would recommend this unit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent for the time I had available to use it.. I received this sprayer about 2 weeks ago, but the weather had not co-operated until this week. I followed the instructions as closely as possible (recommended!) for starting up and testing so I could get used to the spray pattern and such. The painting went so well I was done in about 10 minutes (I re-painted a small wood shed). The coverage was great, and I only needed the one coat (I was not changing color on the shed). The sprayer came nearly fully assembled, and very well packed; I only needed to connect the hose and spray gun. So, it's raining again out here in the Great Pacific North West, so the rest of the outdoor projects will have to wait a little while. However, I have been thinking about re-painting the ceiling in two rooms of my house, so there is no lack of uses for this super-painter! Just a side note, you may find it a little difficult to use a 1 gallon can of paint, as the pick-up tube is made for a 5 gallon sized can, but with a little care, the one gallon can can be used. If not for this issue, I would have give a 5 star rating. If possible, I would have rate it 4 1/2 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Love this machine for my rental properties I bought this machine for the reason that is uses less paint and less over spray and it delivers in both of those things without issues. I currently own 2 Graco airless sprayers but both of those use a lot of paint and I get over spray everywhere. This new Wagner is amazing since I barely see any over spray and it conserves on how much paint i use. One of the great things I like about it is I am able to paint with a gallon and a 5 gallon. It is quick and easy to clean leaving the machine ready for the next project I need it for. I also ordered the Flexio 4000 kit to paint our oak cabinets white and cannot wait for it to arrive. I am Happy with Wagner products thus far as they deliver good results :).

WHen spraying Why does the machine shut off after 3 minutes?

Asked by: Richards
The Control Pro, after getting a prime and switching over to spray, should run until it reaches full pressure, then shut down. Now pull the trigger to spray paint and after a few moments it will start to run again due to a loss of pressure, it may not stop again until after you release the trigger, once it gets to full pressure. If your sprayer is acting differently, give us a call for help at 1-800-328-8251.

I bought a control pro 170 cart, used it for about a week, and now the sprayer won't spray with tip guard on but without the tip guard it would shoot paint out of the gun sprayer. Any thoughts on how to fix it? Thanks in advance!

Asked by: Mariver
I’m having the same issue. It started shortly after first use. The support line is closed until Monday & I only have the weekend to finish my project. I’m extremely disappointed. If this is common can you provide extra tips?

I see your video of how smooth the sprayer 170 airless machine works but I bought one and can’t seem to have that smooth finish and I read and followed everything it said to do. I have a lot of drips and runs and suggestions??

Asked by: Jabeu1
Drips and runs are caused by the trigger being pulled too long or the sprayer not moving across the project fast enough. In other words, drips and runs are totally under your control. Turn down the pressure, use a smaller tip, move faster...are all ways to prevent drips and runs. Practice. For more tips call us at 1-800-328-8251.
