SMART Roller

$ 27.99
The Wagner SMART Roller will transform your home faster than traditional paint rollers, giving you more time to enjoy your freshly painted walls and ceilings. This paint stick roller is a paint roller that holds paint directly in the handle, eliminating the need for roller trays.

A simple squeeze of the ratchet power trigger directly feeds paint to the paint roller cover. When you need more paint, the refillable paint roller draws paint directly from the can.

The paint tube roller is perfect for medium-sized projects, and the extended handle lets you reach 8' ceilings with ease.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Had one for years! Wife likes to paint, I like to paint fast. This will do it for you. I never had any problem with it until I needed a new roller and couldn't find a replacement for it. But had it for years and will just be buying another one to paint my basement. I recommend it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth it Bought it after much debate. Roller came off twice mess everywhere. Don't waste your money. Not to mention the other rollovers I bought. Water money

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Product I used the Smart Roller several times to paint the ceilings of our new house. I had no trouble using the product, and it was a real time saver. Thoroughly cleaning it after each use is crucial -- after each use, I meticulously rinsed all parts, especially the valve components, so each subsequent time it worked well. The roller could use a bit more nap, but other than that, I have no complaints.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your time and money! It quit working after the first 2 tubes of paint. Just quit drawing paint from the can. I tried all the troubleshooting tips to no avail. Poor design and materials. It also takes better than an hour to clean up after use.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from One and Done! Bought this product thinking it would be helpful to paint a ceiling and it was! After that one use, however, I want to break it in half. I spent over and hour meticulously cleaning the many part after the first use only to find my time wasted. This product does not work as well the second time. I tried painting a wall today. The paint spewed unevenly from the holes and the dispenser kept sticking or not pushing the paint out at all. This is not user error, this is a poorly made product. Will be going back to the regular paint roller and tray because this was not worth the hassle.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I wish I read the reviews first I'm returning this product. I wish I had read the reviews first. I have used a similar product in the past and it worked great. Just like many others, my roller cover kept falling off spilling paint all over. I takes quite a bit of pressure to apply a good covering...but wait, there goes the cover again. Then fine for most of the ceiling so I let my guard down...but paint all over again. who wants to use a product that they fear any second will cover them with paint again? The worst part is that I'm helping my dad who was pretty convinced I was doing something wrong. Can't wait to show him the reviews.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor design The roller is held on at the end by a plastic part that starts to fail after painting a small room. The roller keeps falling off which causes paint to spill everywhere. This product would be much improved if they replace the plastic piece that holds the roller on with something that has a locking mechanism. I returned one SMART roller because it failed thinking it might be a fluke. The new one I purchased started to have the same problem after painting a small bedroom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keep your duckbill clean! It works very well when compared to a conventional paint roller and tray setup that costs about the same. I learned my lesson about not cleaning dried paint out of the duckbill but finished the project by placing a quarter inside the fill cap and screwing it shut. Since that time I have been rinsing the duckbill immediately after using it. My only complaint is the retainer clip for the roller, any conventional roller can slip off but when it happens to this one a small volume of paint can spill out. I would suggest a stronger retainer clip to avoid this potential mess. I do wish new duck bills were available right there in the retail isle I would buy up a bunch of them, until then I will keep the change in my pocket to seal the cap! Like ALL painting equipment it needs to be kept clean or you will have a bad experience.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good for two coats on ceiling. That is it. I chose the product to paint my living room, stairwell, and upstairs hallway. I was considering purchasing a competitors project painter sprayer for the job, because, I had painted this room twice before and is a large project. I chose the smart roller instead, due to the cost. (29.99 vs. 229.99) I started out fine and was able to complete two coats on the ceiling and it was fast and easier then just roller and pan (so I thought). It was some what longer to clean up then just a regular roller, but, was able to clean all the paint from it. Then when I began to paint the walls it was difficult to get suction at first, but, after a half an hour of taking it apart and lubing with supplied petroleum jelly (again), I was finally able to load the tube with paint. The lid for the paint can was useless and worked better without it. I was able to finally start throwing paint on the walls, and then every where else from the fill tube. The valve for the fill tube malfunctioned and was dripping paint the whole time. I had to stop, again, I took it apart and cleaned it thoroughly and it still leaked. I finally completed the job with a roller and pan. I was surprised to see that a regular roller and pan that I picked up for 9.99 (with paint brush, edger, roller with 2 covers, a pan, and paint shield) worked better then this product. I will be purchasing the sprayer next time. I guess you get what you pay for. I recommend buying a good old fashioned roller and pan.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A bump in the road I owned one of the earlier models of the Smart roller and was very pleased with it. Due to my own mistake it broke and was discarded. About to start repainting my homes' interior so naturally bought another "paint stick". It arrived today and noticed its' new design that looks promising. Read the owner's manual and started looking for a "spatter guard" that was included with my first Wagner roller. It was no where to be found in the box, so called Wagner. The manual says"To minimize spills and spatters, use the spatter guard..." It really is an important part of the roller system, but not included. My painting project is on hold until my paid for" extra" arrives I really think that if the manual tells you to use a part, they should at least mention it is not included. And apparently only available through Wagner. Hope the Smart roller works better than my current experience.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from dont waste your money, or but it if you want new carpet I do not like it at all. The roller kept coming apart from the dispenser and I ended up with paint dripping all over the place multiple times! I will go back to the Home Right original"paint stick. Im had great results from it but did not buy the extra roller for job being done, hense picking up Wagners. Me bad- bad choice By all means do not order this. It is garbage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great roller but has manufacturing defect I bought one of these and when I installed the metal paint tube into the main body, one of the two retention flexures snapped on the first time. This did this also with the second unit I tried after I returned the first one. All other aspects are good and like the ratchet feature.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great concept but needs some design modifications Decided to try the Wagner Smart roller to save some time. I used it 3 times within a week's time frame. First of all, it says it's easy cleanup. The only way cleanup is easy is if you throw it way after first use. To proper clean all fittings and tubes takes at least 30 minutes and a lot of water. Not cleaning all the parts thoroughly, results in poor performance next time you try to use it. The first go around I painted the ceiling with the Smart roller which worked OK but the short napped roller doesn't hold very much paint without dripping. Even though the drip tray does catch most of the drips, more paint is wasted by drips than a conventional roller. The second go around I was doing walls which worked a little better because I could observe the paint on the roller and try to roll fast enough to avoid dripping. I had to continuously work the paint feeder trigger because the roller would run out of paint quickly. The third time I used the Smart roller, I was totally frustrated because when I squeezed the paint feed trigger paint was oozing out and, sometimes, squirting out of the paint intake hole. Paint was running down the roller handle and dripping on the floor. Very little paint was actually getting to the roller. I finally gave up and returned the product after cleaning up large splatters of paint on the floor. My suggestions : product needs a thicker nap roller, it should be advertised as a one time use or the product should come with detailed cleaning instructions and proper brushes for removing paint on the inside of the tubes and fittings, the length of the handle is short compared to convention roller extension handles which means less reach when doing ceilings and less leverage overall, lastly, you should be able to detach roller or collapse the long handle in a manner that allows you to work in tight spaces, it's a hassle trying to maneuver the full length handle when painting inside a closet.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Roller falls off I got this to try and save time but it ended up taking more of my time cleaning up the mess it made. First the roller fell off when my wife was using it, spilled paint everywhere. Good thing we didn't have carpet in yet. I gave it a try thinking this has to work, I made sure I wasn't sliding the roller back and forth much if not at all just rolling straight up and down to make sure the roller stayed on. Well that didn't work, paint everywhere again. If someone has a trick to keep the roller on I am willing to try it one more time but otherwise its getting returned. Thanks

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fill Valve is Horrible My wife and i have been using the Homeright Paint system for many years. Pretty much since it came out. it was fantastic.Since they were old, I had the brilliant idea to buy a newer model and the other two paint sticks we had saw so much paint, we figured time to get a new one. I really liked the trigger handle on this unit. Everything about the unit was great, at first. We painted a primer on the wall, then we cleaned the unit, started painting the main room color and about half way into it, the fill valve leaked. As the paint is supposed to go to the roller, it leaked right out the valve. I feel even dumber for looking on line and reading that everyone else is having problems with the same thing. I miss my Paint Stick. I have owned this for three days and wish I never bought it. If you know there is something wrong with the fill valve, fix it. In response to the contributor that cannot figure out why the ratings are so low. Use another product like the Paint Stick and use it more than once, then you will understand.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed duck bill valve Opened the box and put the unit together thinking what a great idea this is and time saver. I had everything set up and ready to go, filled the roller with paint and the first squeeze of the handle and the paint come right back out the duck bill valve. I emptied the roller back into the paint gallon and again I filled the roller back up to have the same thing happen again. Not a drop of paint would even go past the duck bill valve. The time I spent going to get the roller, setting it up and then cleaning up the mess, I would've been better off using a regular roller. I really want to use this product cause I believe it would be a great time saver but was very disappointed with the issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why all of the bad reviews? I just finished a fairly large diy painting job with a Smart Roller. This thing saved me a lot of time During research I had never seen a consumer product with so many bad reviews. I don't get it. For the price of two paint brushes I got this roller system that halved the time of rolling paint. I bought two just in case but only used the first one for 3 gallons of paint. I threw it out now that I am done. Maybe earlier generations had problems? For 25 bucks, this is the handiest painting product I have ever bought

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a Paint Mate I've been using a Paint Mate for years, rolled a lot of paint with them and recommended them to friends. Bought one of the first ones when they came out and have been using them since, replacing each one when the old ones wore out. I recently bought the SMART Roller because that's all that was available at Lowe's and am very disappointed with the quality. From the time I took it out of the box I could tell it's a cheap version of the Paint Mate. It's flimsy, especially when painting high on the wall, the nut on the handle kept coming loose and plunger kept backing down, allowing air into the head and spattering when adding paint. Found a Paint Mate Pro on line and will see if the quality is up to what I expect from Wagner.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great concept poor valve Started out great but half way through my project it started sucking air when I tried refilling. Tried cleaning the valve and still didn't work. After looking at the valve closer it appeared that it started to tear. From other reviews it sounds like the valve is a common issue. If there was a better valve I believe it could be a great tool. Until this issue is fixed I wouldn't recommend this roller.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product for the money. Bought the Smart Roller about a year ago and have painted the interior of three houses with it since. Wish I'd purchased this roller long before I did. Once you get the hang of using it, it's a big time saver. Getting paint to draw up into the barrel can be a bit tricky sometimes, but with practice it's not a big deal. I do wish the roller came with extra duck bill valves, as these do wear out after a while and cause leakage. The only other suggestion I'd make is for Wagner to sell a 5 gallon paint bucket lid and fill tube for the Smart Roller; for larger jobs this would be very convenient. Keep all the parts thoroughly cleaned and greased between uses and this roller works very well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from what a mess Brand new out of the box. Read everything twice. Got advice on the internet. Followed the directions and off I went. First ten min I was going great. Then paint began to flow out of the port where you attach to the paint can. All over the machine, my cloths, the floor. Spent the next hour cleaning up. I am disabled and can work on things for just a few hours and then I have to lay down. this ruined my day and set me back. I expect more from Waqner, I have used your products in the past with no or minor problems.. This was a new product!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Saves time... I find that this product has saved me time while painting many hotel rooms. It is easy to use and after you get the hang of it works well. The major issue is the duck bill. I got about 3 or 4 projects done and then noticed that the duck bill is leaking. I would like to buy some duck bills for future use. Then my problem would be solved. Other wise, I believe that the value is great for the time savings.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy the SmartRoller I have an old Paintmate and lost the paint can cover and the fill tube. I thought I buy another one and use the paint can cover with both. When i went to buy another Paintmate all i could find was the SmartRoller so I bought it so I could get my project back on track. I thought I'd use the new SmartRoller. Mistake. The SmartRoller wouldn't draw more than 1/3 of the tube with paint. No matter what I did it wouldn't draw anymore paint. I gave up for the day. I cleaned it up and went to bed. The next day I tried again. The SmartRoller wouldn't draw any paint at all. What a disappointment and waste of time and money. Don't buy the SmartRoller. I wish I hadn't.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good Idea If you could purchase a pocket full of duck bill valves The product worked great for three paint fills before the duck bill valve gave up leaving me with a 1/3 painted room and paint all over the floor. This would not be much of a problem if the dealers carried replacements for them. None of them do. I would think the manufacturer would at least provide a couple of extras in the package when so many people are having problems with them. If you purchase this product make sure you have extra duck bill valves available.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made the job alot easier! Bought this to help makes things easier. I hate the prep time in painting this little number saved the day. No mess worked fine just as advertised. You do have to make sure the fill valve is pressed all the way down on the paint can to form the seal necessary to fill the tube. Anyway great product might look at the small one as a touch up tool.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Smart Rollar Defect Here I will express what I think is a defect in the product, though a good concept but needs more fine tuning. I purchased this when my mechanical sprayer went down and needed something to get some work done. It was recommended to me by my regular paint store employe. I found the "duck bill" was the weak link to the product. Mine tore after the second use. Like many other consumers who bought this and complained that it didn't fill the tube with paint due to lack of suction. This is most likely cause with improper insertion of the fill tube causing to suck air. I think a revamp on the connection is due and eliminate the 'duck bill'. I wonder if putting one of those garden hose adapter's that has the 1/4 on/off and short hose to the paint would work. I returned my rather than fix, repair or invent a better mouse trap.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from worst paint rolling system ever!!! I have used several "paint stick" roller systems - mainly Crafstman brand in the past. The Wagner Smart Roller has got to be the worst piece of garbage ever. Not only do the various parts come apart as I am painting, but the roller itself came off at least five times before I finally gave up. The parts to not stay connected and paint leaks all over the floor. I would definitely not recommend this product to anyone. What a waste of money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Big disappointment!!! I have debated over replacing my old roller with a Smart Roller for so long and finally purchased one to make the job of painting my granddaughters bedroom easier. What a big disappointment - I have wasted the afternoon reading and rereading the manual, reading hints and reviews online, regreasing every part it shows to grease and still, it will not bring paint into the barrel. I have pumped enough times to fill the bathtub, pumped fast, pumped slow, all to no avail. Perhaps I just got a bad apple, but I will be returning this to the store and go back to my old traditional roller.

can i change the paint in the paint to a different color or can i only use one color paint for each roller?

You will need to clean the entire roller assembly when changing colors or one color could bleed in to the other. Feel free to call us at 1-800-328-8251 if you have further questions.

Why does the paint spill out of the fill valve? More paint comes out there than goes on the roller! Need help or suggestions

It may be a failed duckbill valve which sole purpose is to allow paint flow in one direction only. For warranty parts or service, call us at 1-800-328-8251.

My roller worked great the first time , but the second time after filling the tube the paint came out the fill valve not the roller. What should I do?

Asked by: Gman40
Thank you for your question. The part in your fill valve responsible for keeping paint from leaking through, it is called a duckbill valve. If the duckbill valve were misplaced it will leak through the fill valve, the duckbill valve can also leak if a small tear develops in it. Please give our technical support a call at 1-800-328-8251 and we will be able to assist you.
