How To Paint A Mailbox
You may not think of it or even notice it, but how does your mailbox look these days? Updating your mailbox is a simple project and can go a long way to improving the overall look of your property and add some curb appeal.
There are a lot of options when it comes to upgrading your mailbox and it can be a chance to add some personality. Painting a design such as flowers can bring some added beauty, creating a new structure by adding some bricks can add stability, or some homeowners have even gone green and recycled old computers, football helmets, license plates or birdhouses to create their mailbox with some personality.
Maybe the easiest way to upgrade your mailbox and protect it from the harsh weather is to simply add some paint.
Rags
Water
Wire brush
Primer paint
Black metal paint
Red metal paint
Brush or Wagner Sprayer
Screwdriver
Drop cloth

Step 1
Prepare the mailbox for painting. Remove the mailbox from the post or stand and place in a good working area that is well ventilated and out of the direct sunlight.
Step 2
Get the mailbox clean. Wash the mailbox down to remove all the dirt and dust that is on the surface. Allow the surface to get completely dry. Remove any address numbers or stickers from the mailbox.
Step 3
Sand down any rust that has formed. Replace any bolts, rivets or screws that are missing. Check that the flag is in good working order. Cover the flag with tape. Wipe down any of the rust that has been brushed off.
Step 4
Start priming the metal mailbox. It is important to prime the mailbox because that will allow the paint to adhere to the surface and provide better protection. Apply the primer by spraying it on in even coats, be sure to cover all sides, top, bottom and back. Let it dry at least 24 hours.
Step 5
Paint the mailbox. Apply the paint to the mailbox in slow and even sections. Cover the entire surface. Once the mailbox is dry, carefully remove the tape and paint the flag. Optional: Once the flag is dry, add the address stickers to mailbox.
