Step 1
Remove the door from the hinge. Carefully place the door in your workshop or up against a wall, so it can't tip over and get damaged. Remove all the door knobs and hardware. Organize all the hardware in a bag or box that is clearly marked so it won't get lost or misplaced
Step 2
Sand down any rough areas. Patch up any dents or deep scratches with wood putty. Let those dry and sand over. Wipe down the doors to remove any remaining dust.
Step 3
Select a high quality stain and work in well ventilated area and use a mask, gloves and safety glasses.
Step 4
After you have thoroughly prepared and cleaned the surface, allow it to dry for 24-48 hours prior to painting or staining it. This will ensure the maximum readiness of your projects surface and allow for the best possible material adherence and coverage.
Step 5
As the doors dry, work to stain the door jamb. Mask off the walls, floor and surrounding areas. Spray on the stain. Apply the stain evenly and always go with the grain of the wood. Have a cloth ready to smooth out any heavy areas or possible drips. Complete all the door jambs and then stain the doors. Let dry and then you can apply a second coat of stain.
